Living out the commandment of Jesus

On Maundy Thursday we remember that Jesus came to serve and he demonstrated this through washing the feet of his disciples. After washing their feet, he asked them, "Do you know what I have done to you? So if I, the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. (John 13:12b, 14)" And he gave them a new commandment, "that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. (John 13:34)."

Normally, in addition to Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday services, we celebrate the last supper together as a church family on Maundy Thursday. While we will not be together physically, all are invited to live out the Maundy Thursday Commandment, to love one another, as Christ loves us." In Lieu of our traditional Maundy Thursday gathering and worship, all are invited to participate in a “Holy Week of Service." Pick an activity or multiple activities for each of the days leading up to Good Friday. There are things for young and old, individuals and families, for homebound and those able to venture out, people of all abilities and skill sets. Look at what best fits your schedule, skills, and abilities and drop us a note so we can give thanks to God for all the many ways RRPC shares the love of Christ with the world.

Sunday - Spreading Joy

Jesus is the light of the world. And we are called to be His light here in our lives. In other words, we are called to “share the joy”.  Good deeds don’t always have to be huge, like giving a billion dollars to some charity or volunteering 20 hours a day at a soup kitchen. Giving money and volunteering are great, and we should do both, but we can show Jesus’ love in the little things too, like offering a person a listening ear, showing compassion, extending forgiveness, being the first to apologize, or letting someone else go first in a busy line.  Here are some other ideas:

Tuesday - Caring & Sharing

'Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ'. - Galatians 6:2.

Jesus “went about doing good” — He was actively concerned about the sick, the dying, the bereaved, the lonely, the downtrodden, the despised, the poor, the aged, and the children

We seek to live a more Christ-like life through the practice of caring and sharing with those around us.  This practice helps others understand when someone else is in need and shows a sense of responsibility towards all in our community. Sharing, in turn, shows caring, and can bring the entire community together.

Wednesday - Those Who Serve

The phrase, “those who serve”, naturally brings to mind those in the armed services that have and continue to honorably serve our nation. But we should also show our appreciation for those who daily serve our community as postal workers, teachers, trash collectors, and other public servants. A short note of thanks or small gift to show our appreciation will make their day!

Thursday - Feed My Sheep

“Jesus said to him, 'Feed my lambs.' A second time he said to him … 'Tend my sheep.' He said to him the third time … 'Feed my sheep.'  After this he said to him, 'Follow me.' “ John 21:15-19

We are called to be Christ’s hands and feet here on earth. Here, on the eve of his betrayal, taking some time to care for those in His flock can be a meaningful way to prepare your heart for His death and resurrection.
